Amina Hussain was born in
Manchester and studied at Chetham’s School of Music
for four years under Rachel Holt and Gitte Sorencen.
Amina then went on to study at the Royal Northern College
of Music with Clare Southworth, Richard Davis and Peter
Lloyd, and in her first year was a semi-finalist in the
BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition.
On leaving the Royal Northern College of Music in 1998,
Amina worked as guest principal flute with both the
Orquesta Sinfonica de Tenerife and the Orquesta Sinfonica
de Galicia.
Amina has most recently trialled with English National Opera
for the position of Sub-Principal flute, whilst also
playing Principal. Previous trials include Bournemouth
Symphony Orchestra (two trials for the position of
Principal flute and a trial for Sub-Principal flute),
Welsh National Opera (Sub-Principal) and English National
Ballet (Principal).
Other orchestral work includes a mixture of Principal and
extra work with Northern Sinfonia, Halle Orchestra, BBC
Philharmonic Orchestra, Goldberg Chamber Orchestra,
English National Ballet, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic
Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Northern Chamber
Orchestra, Manchester Concert Orchestra, Swansea City
Opera and the Bristol-based Emerald Ensemble.
Amina is also active in education work and has been
involved with Ensemble 10:10 composition workshops at
Manchester and Liverpool Universities, Sound Inventors
Composition workshops for the Society for the Promotion
of New Music and has frequently worked with the Magdala
Opera Company in and around Nottingham schools creating
alternative opera performances.
